we have officially moved into our building at 2323 N. Illinois. last saturday, adam and i, along with a group of our most loyal volunteers (PK, Fox, Beth, Laurel & Joy) emptied our storage unit (goodbye extra storage expense) and moved our not-so-light load in through our favorite overhead door. this friday, we will pick up our printed marketing materials and i will begin hitting this streets this weekend while the rest of the core team takes one final respite before the main drag.
in case you did not see it, NUVO made the official announcement for ORANJE 2008 in yesterday's edition (wednesday, august 6, 2008, 'best of indy' issue) with a half page ad on page 5. speaking of NUVO, we're glad to have them back again this year, and be sure to catch them with us at Penrod on saturday, september 6th at the IMA grounds. as well, don't forget to check out the NUVO Arts Guide that comes out that week. this is all you need to catch a glimpse of Indy's art scene, whether you're new to town, or a creative veteran.
we'd also like to officially welcome our newest set of sponsors for 2008. Scion has agreed to sponsor a live art exhibit at the event, and i hear a few cars may be getting painted. be sure to visit Butler Scion if you're shopping for a new whip to roll to ORANJE this year, and be on the lookout for this exhibit when you walk into the event this year (in fact, if you're not looking out, you may just run right into it).
additionally, we have signed on The Great Frame Up for a 4th straight year (BIG shout out to Bruce and Scott, you guys have been great over the years and we're really excited about what you'll be doing this year). as well, we welcome the return of IndyMojo, who will be taking on the majority of our street level promotions. look for the ORANJE Indy Mojo Street Team as we give The Blast to indy over the next 6 weeks. finally, we have secured 11th hour deals with SALT Catering, Sequences Design, and Batical 1 Products, all long time members of the ORANJE family (very special thanks to Fox/Batical 1 for a seventh straight ORANJE!). the Helicon Lounge may sound a little different this year at ORANJE, but unique collaborations, working the angles, and new situations can make for a fresh experience. i guess you'll just have to attend ORANJE 2008 to discover what's in store...speaking of that, you will not want to miss the experience of the ORANJE 2008 Savvy Fashion Lounge. wow.
coming up on saturday, august 16th is the 3rd 'Peel' event at Subterra. Peel: Your Way To ORANJE, highlights various ORANJE artists and musicians and offers us an expanded base from which we can promote our main event, ORANJE. this time, we feature the high-energy musical collaboration of Kenny Sutton and Rhythm Meltdown. we'll be partyin all night so come down and take a bite of our ORANJE crew.
look for us at Penrod (saturday, september 6th), out on the streets at various events (Mudkids at Spin on saturday night, september 6th; 1st Fridays on Mass Ave; Subsurface; etc) and of course, at ORANJE 2008 on Saturday, September 20th at 2323 N. Illinois St. in downtown Indy.
if you're in a gray area, perhaps you just need a little ORANJE?
you can Peel your way there this saturday, july 19th @ Spin Nightclub (6308 N. Guilford in Broad Ripple).
Peel: Your Way To ORANJE! part II of this year's 'Peel' series, highlighting ORANJE and its participants, takes place @ Spin, and features the live sounds of Otto Vector (Detroit), Butterfly Assassins (Chicago) & Indy's own Mardelay. Rounding out the evening, your host, DJ Helicon. p.s. i've got a special little treat in mind. hope you're there to hear it.
in addition to the nonstop music, we will feature live art, interactive txt messaging and NUVO, Stoli and Miller promo teams. also in the house on the late night will be the Savvy Salon & Chapstick Weekly crews.
drink specials all night long. great bands. a lil heli (maybe a surprise guest appearance?). live art. the ORANJE crew. the Savvy crew. if you're not at this party, we'll tell you about it next week and you'll ask yourself, 'why did i miss it?' & wonder wonder why.
ORANJE is coming. Saturday September 20th, 2008. let's begin by Peelin'. see you @ Spin this Saturday night. 10pm.
We have selected our 2008 (visual art) Participants, and are excited about the arrival of some ORANJE first-timers, as well as the welcoming back of some multi-year veterans.
The ORANJE 2008 Music Lineup will also be announced in the coming days.
We are also in the process of narrowing down our site selection for this year's event, and will look to announce that information as soon as it is finalized. Stay tuned to the appropriate channels for the official announcement.
In the meantime, please let us know if you may yet be interested in participating as an artist or sponsor organization.
Don't forget about Peel: Your Way To ORANJE, the preview event series highlighting ORANJE and its participants. The 2nd Peel event is coming up on Saturday, July 19th at Spin Nightclub in Broad Ripple. The next (3rd) Peel event will be on Saturday, August 16th at Subterra Lounge, featuring Rhythm Meltdown w/ Joe Melton and Kenny Sutton.
Special thanks go out to NUVO, Miller, Print Resources, Stoli, Savvy Salon & Sangiovese.
That's right. We are currently taking art, music and other creative submissions for ORANJE 2008. Visual artists should email jpgs and accompanying artist bios or media kits to info@oranjeindy.com.
Musicians, bands, DJs and other performers may send Electronic Press Kits or links to web media to ryan@oranjeindy.com. Please put ''Band Name' ORANJE 2008 Submission' in the subject line of the email. DO NOT EMAIL SONG FILES. WE WILL ONLY ACCEPT EPKs, LINKS TO FILES AND/OR WEBSITES.
ORANJE is scheduled for Saturday, September 20, 2008 and will take place at a location to be announced later this summer.
In other news (shoutout to FloriBama Tom!), the ORANJE team will be active this summer as we dot the promotional calendar with various events we will host throughout the city. Last Friday we organized the Print Resources Grand Opening Tent Party, which was a huge hit, as we used The Force (and Cynthia Layne) to keep the storms from crushing us.
Coming up on Saturday, June 21st, we will host the first of three Peel (Your Way to ORANJE) events. The first Peel (1.08), will take place the evening of the 21st at Sangiovese Ristorante on 86th St. We look forward to welcoming guests in the warm atmosphere Sangiovese offers, including the unique back deck experience with a spectacular water view. The evening will be filled with music, great drink specials, food and a great vibe of people. (Note: Sangiovese is going to turn into a hot social spot in the after dinner hours. You heard it here first).
ORANJE is now in session. Hit us up. Volunteer with us. Come see us around town. We look forward to another wonderful year of ORANJE.
Wow. I guess all the blogging transferred to other media (myspace, etc.) but it's time to get back on the scene here at oranjeindy.com. We are preparing for an exciting year. I wanted to share a few updates.
ORANJE enters its seventh year in production in 2008, and we eagerly await another fantastic collection of creative minds, supportive sponsors and enthusiastic patrons. Currently, we are in negotiations with property owners for a building, as well as with various companies and organizations for sponsorship support.
In the coming weeks, we will be putting out our Call For Participants and accepting submissions from a variety of artists and musicians. Please stay tuned to the site for updates regarding participation in ORANJE 2008. As well, signing up for our mailing list ensures that you will receive all information sent out regarding participation.
In addition to looking for a building and participants for our 2008 event, we are looking into moving into a full-time office to house our operations. Believe it or not, up until this point, we have never had that 'luxury.' More to come on that, too.
We are gearing up for a great summer. Already, we have had discussions with artists, musicians, staff and sponsors who have participated in the past and we welcome their passion back to ORANJE. This summer's promotional outlook is additionally exciting as we look forward to hosting our series of events leading up to the September event (Peel: Your Way to ORANJE, b4, and ORANJE @ Penrod).
Please let us know if you are interested in participating in any way this year by emailing us at info@oranjeindy.com.
We're Peelin, we've got Mojo and it's beginning to smell like ORANJE!
Greetings Friends and Supporters of ORANJE,
I wanted to check in and drop a quick update. The blog has slept lately, but now we're back in full swing with ORANJE stuff.
Here's what's going down in the near future:
-Mojo Mondays on the Circle. Come downtown every Monday (weather permitting) and have lunch with Hup, IndyMojo, DJ Helicon and crew! 11am-1pm on Monument Circle, downtown Indy. All summer long when the weather is nice. Learn about other upcoming events, have lunch, mingle, listen to music, see live performances and enjoy daytime life in downtown Nap!
-Peel: The Way to ORANJE. Come help build the vibe for ORANJE 2007 at our ongoing promotional series. 'Peel' will take place at venues throughout town. Stay tuned to oranjeindy.com for details, including information leading up to as well as photo recaps of the events. Events will take place on June 23, July 21, and August 11.
-Participate in ORANJE 2007: We are still taking submissions for participation in ORANJE 2007. Please send your work examples, proposal and/or EPKs to info@oranjeindy.com and let us know who you are and how you'd like to be a part of ORANJE. The submission period is open through July 1, 2007. If you are interested in volunteer opportunities, please let us know.
Looking forward to seeing everyone out on the streets, at the events, and ultimately, at ORANJE on Saturday, September 15, 2007!
We have a building! Yes, that is correct. ORANJE has secured a facility for this year's show. We are now scouring the streets of Indianapolis with our flyers promoting the 5th Annual ORANJE! This year, we will excite patrons inside the walls of the former FOX 59 TV Studios at 1440 N. Meridian St. We are delighted to have the opportunity to make use of yet another unique building with a special history.
So now, the ORANJE team is hitting the streets to spread the word, and the numbers look good! 40 artists. 13 bands. 13 DJs. 4 enviro-lounges. 2 video artists... and a few thousand of our closest friends! We can't wait to see everyone out that night, and we are now officially underway with onsite preparations for ORANJE 2006.
As we like to say in hip hop: Once again it's on!
P.S. Big up! to Josh Baker and the MMS crew for a great weekend of music. Special thanks to the fans who came out to support Mudkids in one of the finest displays Russell and Skits have put on in quite some time. We truly had a great time with that and look forward to the things to come. And if you were at the after party, well, that is another story, entirely.
The first blog in a while. The first of many to come. ORANJE season is definitely in full effect once again.
Before I get started I want to talk about our friend Mpozi Mshale Tolbert. The ORANJE family, as well as the Indianapolis community lost a good friend and true warrier on Monday, July 3rd. While we will miss Mpozi very dearly--the reggae tent @ ORANJE will not be the same without him--we will also do our best to continue working hard to present ORANJE every year to Indy and help bring to light the amazingly talented members of our art and music community. We know if Mpozi could speak to us now, he would say just keep doing what you're doing. This has been a truly tough loss for the team, but from this experience, strength and positivity will be gained, and Mpozi will be there with us in spirit forever.
We are pleased to announce that our artists and musicians have been selected for the 2006 showcase. Emails have been and will be sent out this weekend to inform participants who have been selected. The lineup this year, both artistically and musicically, is quite exciting, and we are anxious to see the ideas of each participant begin to unfold in the coming weeks.
Other details, including event location, will be announced in the coming weeks. Stay tuned to the website for the most up-to-date information. In addition, if you wish to receive these updates by email, please sign up for our mailing list if you have not already. This can be done on the front page of the site.
Enjoying the last few minutes of free time for the summer...
What I meant to say was, ORANJE was off the chain! Well, at least everything except for the stages in the Bassment. Those were hung from chains.
Wow. What an incredible night. We can't even begin to explain how much it meant to us to have all the great people involved, from our sponsors to the participants to the people who helped us clean up the building. Our hearts go out to you, and we give you the applause of a coliseum.
This has been such a great experience. While there are certainly times that it's a difficult road, we've made some great friends along the way, experienced unbelievable success and growth as an event and are proud to be contributing to the Public Art Initiative. For the few bad things that happen, there are hundreds of successes that crush the bad things. We are very grateful to all those who participated and attended, and we cannot wait to bring you the next ORANJE.
It looks as if it is safe to say we had over 2,000 people this year. Closer to 2,200 including participants. It's been a wild ride, and we are looking forward to taking some time to reflect on this year's show.
If anyone has any pictures, we'd love to see them. We would like to put some of the better ones up on the site. If you have any photos from the night of the event, or even good ones from the setup, please contact us if you would allow us to put them up on the site. We will credit you for them.
Thanks again, everyone! We will see you around the way this winter, and look forward to another incredible night next September. ORANJE 2006 is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, September 16th, 2006. Mark your calendars!
DJ Helicon
p.s. I had a blast onstage with Cynthia Layne, the Fashion Show models, and en2. Wow! What a great time!
The ORANJE team takes a break for the weekend of Sept 2-4 and will return on Tuesday.
We'll be out this week at AMP (Art, Music, People), The Mass Ave Fall Gallery Walk, The Midwest Electronic Music Festival, Greekfest and believe it or not, several other events.
We are tired. But excited, too, for what is set to be the best ORANJE yet!
See you out on the streets, or at 1601 N. Penn on Saturday the 17th.
Preparation of the building. Promotion. Daily creative additions.
ORANJE is gelling. We are happy to report that over 50 artists, 30 musical acts and various other parts of the show are all starting to take shape and prepare for an incredible night on Saturday, September 17th, 2005. We feel that this will be our best show to date.
The Former Herron Art School building at 16th and Penn is proving to be a perfect space for us. It has all the square footage we need, a great layout, an expansive and rich art history, perfect location and adequate power (we have saved a lot of time this year not having to run power everywhere in the building as we have in the past).
Promoting 5-6 nights a week is very tiring. That's why I find myself taking naps at odd times like 7pm-midnight, etc. Organizing this show is often times a surreal experience, but nonetheless, the night of 9.17.05 will be special and we are really excited about everyone's involvement this year.
A limited number of presale tickets are still available. Please contact us if you need them (info@oranjeindy.com).
We also have a number of volunteer opportunities. Please email info@oranjeindy.com if you are available to volunteer for the preparation/promotion of ORANJE or at the actual show.
Hope to see you out on the streets during mega-promotion.
July 1st marked the submission deadline for ORANJE 2005. We must say, it has been an honor to receive so many incredible submissions. Sifting through these is certainly going to be a lot of fun, but also frustrating, knowing we cannot select everyone to participate. Nonetheless, we are looking forward to our jurying process which will take place this week. Shortly after we have reviewed all submissions, we will announce the art booths and music lineup for ORANJE 2005.
Stay tuned to the site/blog for updates on ORANJE, including the location and the art/music lineup, which will all be announced very shortly.
If you are interested in volunteering for ORANJE, please email us at info@oranjeindy.com and mention you'd like to volunteer. We truly appreciate all of those who have offered their services already. Thank you!
Despite the hiatus from blogging, ORANJE has been busy. Some of you may have seen us running around with Red Bull during the Race Weekends (500, F1). That was a lot of fun, and incredibly 'connective' for ORANJE because we met people from all over the world. I even had the opportunity to take a photo at the track on F1 day with some Dutch folks. I was sporting the 'Grand Prix' orange Adidas, and we ran into some Nederlanders with ORANGE CLOGS! Hilarious! And it's straight clownin' because Dutch people DO NOT wear clogs. Anyway, we got our picture taken, because we all knew at that point we were probably the only 3 people in Indy wearing orange shoes. I gave them an ORANJE flyer and explained to them what it was, and that Holland did, in fact, inspire the name ORANJE. They were cool as hell and I rapped with them about my time spent in Delft. Maybe they'll come to ORANJE someday...
Otherwise, we're finalizing details on the location of this year's event, and will announce information within the coming weeks. ORANJE 2005 will be on Saturday, September 17th. We are still taking submissions for artists, musicians, performance artists, or any other participant for this year's show. The deadline for submissions is Friday, July 1st. We are really excited to be hearing from a number of new artists this year. Everyone keep up the great work! We will confirm the artist and music lineup by the middle of July.
We'd also like to thank the multitude of people who have requested volunteer information for ORANJE. It really means a tremendous deal to us to have that kind of support in the community. We will be compiling a database of volunteers in the next 2 weeks, and will create an email list to update everyone on volunteer needs. We will need volunteers for a street team for the Midwest Music Summit (www.midwestmusicsummit.com), including the week leading up to the event. The MMS takes place July 21-23 in Broad Ripple and Downtown. Please let us know if you'd like to help the street team promote MMS and ORANJE that week! Send an email to info@oranjeindy.com.
Adam, Tricia (our new intern), the Street Team and I look forward to seeing everyone around town this summer as we prepare for and promote ORANJE 2005.
Stay tuned...the blog shall live again in Summer '05!
Helicon
P.S. I got to open up for The Crystal Method on Sunday. Sweet.
We can't wait. Things are coming together so well, it is even blowing our minds how incredible ORANJE will be this year. We are grateful from the bottom of our hearts and the depths of our souls that Indy has shown such tremendous support for something as f*$#ed up as ORANJE. Patrons of ORANJE, pat yourselves on the back for being so cool, and brace yourselves for some of the most amazingly talented performances and exhibitions this side of the White River.
Exhaustion has infiltrated our bodies. We are relying on a steady dose of caffeine, and a lot of inspiration to keep us going. A day behind the scenes at ORANJE would make any normal person drop to the ground. However, the creative and wonderful people that compose this event make it worth every energy-draining moment. We are just so thankful to be doing this. It is unbelievable. Truly.
It is safe to say that everyone is very excited about Saturday night. Remember, the doors open at 8pm, and we will rock it out until 3am. ORANJE will ripen this Saturday, September 18th @ 602 E. Washington St, in beautiful downtown Indianapolis. Tickets are still available through Ticketmaster (www.ticketmaster.com), as well as at Monon Coffee Co., Urbane Optical, and Tee's Daydream's, for $12. Otherwise, tickets can be purchased at the door for $15.
Who needs sleep?
Ryan
'DJ Helicon'
*check me out on the wheels of steel in The Jungle @ midnight, opening for en2 (a collaboration, perhaps...)
We are pleased to announce that preparations for ORANJE 2004 are coming together quite well, and anticipation is building for this year's show. As always, ORANJE will present a wealth of talent and other surprises that will find anyone in attendance both intrigued and impressed.
As usual, advance tickets can be purchased via Ticketmaster (www.ticketmaster.com). Tickets are $12 advance, $15 day of and will be available at the door. ORANJE opens to the public at 8:00pm on Saturday, September 18th. Doors will close around 3:00am.
This year, ORANJE is proud to present some of the best local performers in addition to our display artists. Our music lineup has evolved tremendously, including such talents as Woody McBride (DJ ESP), Loretta, Lunar Event, en2, and of course myself, DJ Helicon!! Over 20 performers in all, featured on 4 stages throughout the entire night. All of us who are performing at ORANJE are getting ready for one of the best nights of the year. I know I cannot wait! The music lineup for ORANJE 2004 will be as follows (please note some changes have been made):
Thank you to all of you who applied for participation in ORANJE 2004. All artists for ORANJE 2004 have been selected. We have been very fortunate to get a wonderful sneak preview of this year's showcase, and look forward to working with those of you who will be participating. Those artists selected to participate should have received notification via email. If you have not received an email from us, you will be contacted this week.
We are also in the process of finalizing the music lineup for ORANJE 2004. Huge thanks to IndianapolisMusic.net (www.IndianapolisMusic.net) and illmeasures (www.illmeasures.com) for their tremendous assistance in bringing prominence to the music this year at ORANJE. The lineup, which will be released in the coming weeks, is going to be outstanding this year, with a large group of performers who have yet to grace the stage @ ORANJE. Some of Indy's best bands will be joining us this year, and there will be performances that should simply not be missed, including an incredible DJ lineup from throughout the Midwest.
Please stay tuned to the website for upcoming details as the weeks get closer to September 18th. Don't forget to support the Midwest Music Summit (www.midwestmusicsummit.com) and come check out ORANJE @ The Red Room during the Summit, August 12-14. We look forward to seeing you out on the streets very soon, as the administrative details are finalized now and we move towards the production phase.
Remember: Information on VIP tickets and volunteer opportunities can be obtained by emailing us info@oranjeindy.com.
Can't wait to see all of you on Saturday, September 18th!!
Unfortunately, air-conditioning is the only thing that can truly beat the heat. In the meantime, however, we are developing another great ORANJE for September 18th. We sincerely thank those of you who have submitted to participate in this year's show, and we look forward to seeing/hearing what has yet to arrive. I must say, it's going to be the toughest year to date for selecting musicians and other performers. Wow! What an incredibly ambitious music scene we have here for a city that receives no national attention whatsoever. I truly appreciate the sincerity with which people approach me about performing at ORANJE. That is what will continue to make this event have soul. As for the art we have seen so far...once again some incredible work. What a delight to see Indianapolis continue to produce such talent!
We are currently attempting to finalize negotiations on the space that we will lease for this year's ORANJE. Certainly, many of you are excited to learn the location for ORANJE, but rest assured, we are being as careful as possible as we select our site. Many factors weigh into our decision for where the event will take place, and we will have our location and make an official announcement soon.
Please continue to submit your work examples (artists) and Press Kits (musicians) through the end of the month. Stay tuned in early July for information on who will be participating in this year's show. Again, we sincerely thank you for your commitment to this event and for the passion you put into your creative work.
We look forward to hearing from and seeing you throughout the summer.
Hello Everyone. Things are rolling along quite well for ORANJE thus far, we are confident this year's show will be tremendously successful for all involved. We have teamed up with IndianapolisMusic.net as one of our sponsors this year, and they will be assisting with promotions in the music community. Check them out at www.IndianapolisMusic.net
Please be advised that we have posted our call for submissions for this year's show. We are seeking artists of any medium, and the focus of the show is that of contemporary and/or progressive art. The call for submissions includes musicians as well. Please send art submissions, preferably in digital format, to adam@oranjeindy.com. If you need to send submissions via postal mail, please mail to ORANJE, 909 E. 51st St., Indianapolis, IN, 46205. Music submissions can be mailed to Ryan, preferably in CD-R format, to the same address; any questions regarding music booking can be sent to ryan@oranjeindy.com. Submissions will become property of ORANJE and will not be returned, so please be sure to avoid sending originals. ORANJE is a juried event, and therefore not all artists can be included in the show. Also please be aware that the deadline for submissions is June 30th. The booth fee for this year's show is $75, which will be due at our participant kickoff meeting in July.
Stay tuned for further updates. We shall anticipate the arrival of your submissions and look forward to working with each of you.
It has been wonderful to witness the arrival of spring, and as such, ORANJE has recovered from the winter blues and bounced back into action for 2004. We are excited to announce and welcome the newest member of the ORANJE family, Laurel Pitt, who will be interning for us throughout the development of ORANJE 2004. She is going to be a tremendous boost for us in many ways, and most of you will get to know her at some point. As things develop, please be sure to introduce yourselves to her as you will likely be working closely with her throughout ORANJE. It is also that time of year that we are scouring the city in search of the perfect location for this year's event, and we are looking at a few sites that are very interesting.
Stay tuned to the site for upcoming information regarding artist calls, sponsorship and event location. The ORANJE team will be bringing a lot of excitement to the art and cultural scene this summer, and we are very anxious to begin on-site development for the show. Hope to see some of you out on the streets this summer as we spread the word and try to earn the support of some new folks this year.
